FIELD GUIDE
Namibia is space. The oldest desert on Earth meets a cold Atlantic coast strewn with shipwrecks; dunes rise 300 metres high and turn from apricot to blood red as the sun moves. Our expedition crosses the Namib, follows the Skeleton Coast north and tracks desert-adapted elephants in Damaraland.
Nadia, our expedition leader, has driven these tracks for fifteen years. Camps are small, solar-powered and owned with local communities, and every evening ends around a fire under a sky crowded with stars.
Good to know
- Distances are big: some days include five or six hours of driving on gravel roads.
- Bring a warm jacket — desert nights in winter can fall below zero.
- Malaria risk is low in the areas we visit, but ask your doctor.
- Photography is extraordinary; bring a spare battery and memory card.
